On 10 July 2012, the China Economy Program within the Crawford School, in collaboration with the Rio Tinto–ANU China Partnership, presented the twelfth China Update. At this annual event, leading academics, policy makers and government representatives discussed the latest research on the Chinese economy. Over the years, the China Update has cemented its status as Australia’s premier forum for in-depth discussion and analysis of the Chinese economy.

Chinese investment increasingly unwelcome in Australia

The Australian Opposition has jumped on public concern about China’s state owned enterprises investing in Australia, by declaring such practice is rarely in the national interest. But Dr James Laurenceson, president of the Chinese Economics Society of Australia, says Australia needs more Chinese investment, not less.

The Australian government has begun to question the motives of China’s state owned enterprises investing in Australia. But the Opposition leader, Tony Abbott, has gone one step further, declaring such investment rarely in the national interest. Dr James Laurenceson is the president of the Chinese Economics Society of Australia.

China Update 2011 – Rising China: Global Challenges and Opportunities – held in Canberra on July 2011

The Rio Tinto – ANU China Update was held for its eleventh time in 2011. Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer, the Hon Wayne Swan MP, gave the keynote address and spoke of the strengthening relationship between Australia and China. Leading academics from around the world such as Deborah Brautigam, Ross Garnaut and Yiping Huang discussed many of the challenges and opportunities surrounding China’s rise on to the global economic stage. The Update coincided
with the launch of the China Update book, edited by Jane Golley and Ligang Song. The book is published by the ANU E Press, with the Chinese Social Sciences Academic Press publishing the Chinese language version.

Fudan University and CESA held a joint international Conference on 19-20 September 2011

The China Center for Economic Studies (CCES), Fudan University and CESA held a joint international Conference on Transition and Economic Development: Economic Recovery and Structural Change at Fudan University in Shanghai on 19-20 September 2011. Keynote speakers included Albert Park, Wing Thye Woo, Jun Zhang and Funing Zhong.  A selection of papers is currently being reviewed for a special Symposium issue in the China Economic Review, co-edited by Jane Golley and Jun Zhang.
